[...] H&M and Animal Rights & the Environment Lesser known to common shoppers is that H&M has taken up a number of animal and environmental causes seriously and have taken policy decisions to adhere to these causes. H&M has rejected mulesing. Mulesing is a procedure of surgical removal of portions of wool bearing skin around a sheep’s tail. This is done to prevent the incidence of flystike which causes death to the sheep. The Merino sheep is particularly susceptible to it. In flystrike, the female flies lays eggs on the damp breeches of the sheep. Once the larvae hatch they start feeding on the hosts’ tissues and rapidly spreads resulting in infection and death. Mulesing is an effective method of preveting flystrike but it is not animal friendly. Animal rights and Welfare activists consider this anaesthetized mulesing to be inhumane. Also this seems to lead to increased chances of arthritis in lambs. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has been canvassing for support against mulesing amongst clothing retailers. Some fashion and clothing retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and H&M have started the boycott of using the Australian merino wool where mulesing is practiced. H&M obtains the wool supplies from other countries or from suppliers in Australia who can guarantee mulesing free wool. H&M is a member of National Retail Federation which has had an agreement with the Australian Wool Industry that mulesing would be replaced by friendlier methods by 2010. On the environment front too H&M has taken steps. It has made efforts to improve conventional cotton growing and promotes organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. H&M is a member of the Organic Exchange which promotes organic cotton growing. H&M is a licensed user of the Flower, the official symbol of European Eco label. This means that throughout the production chain, there are restrictions on usage of harmful substances, water pollution etc. Focus is also put on containing carbon emissions and energy conservation in the warehouses, stores and transportation.
